August McLaughlin is an inspiring blogger… she is funny, supportive and challenges her (many) readers with every post. Her latest (ingenious) idea? Bring real women bloggers together in community to support real beauty with the Beauty of a Woman BlogFest.
Having given in to self-criticism on many occasions (with disastrous results to health and happiness), I strongly encourage this type of honest communication. Perhaps we can learn how to relate to each other more openly instead of comparing ourselves with other women (and finding ourselves lacking)… maybe we can start sharing the burden of our individual struggles rather than fighting over who’s doing it “better.”
I am honored to participate in the Beauty of a Woman BlogFest by sharing the following posts from my personal archive…
- Resolving to Increase Self-Confidence in the New Year (December 28, 2011)
- Loosening Fear’s Grip on My Life – The Courage of Motherhood (December 7, 2011)
- Vanity Unleashed: How Comparisons Damage Self-Image (November 14, 2011)
- Making Tough Decisions for Lasting Happiness (August 1, 2011)
- The Weight of Cultural Expectations: Building Healthy Self Confidence in Girls (July 18, 2011)
I welcome your insights about womanhood. What makes you feel beautiful? How has your definition of beauty changed as you have aged?

Whenever I need a reminder about beauty I reread Proverbs 31. Works every time!
What a great reminder! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jana-popping by from the blogfest. I love your post on building healthy self-confidence for girls! That is so so important. Great advice!
So true! I am terrified about somehow setting my daughter up for a negative self-image (given my personal history, it is so possible) so I am really learning to speak nicely to myself!
So happy that you came to “visit” – August has a way of bringing people together!
Wonderful blog. I’m looking forward to checking out your links.
Thanks so much for stopping by! I am eager to look over the other blog submissions from the BlogFest… what a wonderful topic to join forces on!
Thanks for the blog and the links to your other writings.

What a lovely idea. Especially the idea about sharing the burden.
Funny that one if the readers commented about Proverbs 31 woman. I read about her and think, I will never live up to her. When does she sleep?
Bless you Jana. You’re a light in this world.

Too funny! I, too, find the Biblical ideals a little hard to live up to. Which is likely why I appreciate the calm and inner peace that meditation brings. There’s no competition involved
